When we think of itchy scalp the first thing that
comes to mind is dandruff, but an itchy scalp can be caused by quite a few
things other than dandruff. Some other common condition such as psoriasis or
seborrheic dermatitis may be the root of an itchy scalp. It may even be caused
by an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis.
Psoriasis is a chronic condition that occurs on the scalp
as well as other areas of the body. It is common to see dry scaly white powder
patches that tend to be very itchy. It may appear on the arms, chest and ears
as well. Psoriasis may even affect the joints in some people.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common condition that
many people suffer from. Like dandruff it is characterized by flaky skin, but
also consists of greasy yellowish scales and red irritated skin. People with
this condition find it very itchy and uncomfortable. Scratching only serves to
worsen the problem and encourage infection.
Many itchy scalp problems actually come from a reaction to
something the scalp has been in contact with. This is called contact
dermatitis. There can be many causes for contact dermatitis, but the primary
one is the chemicals in the hair products we use. Many people know that hair
treatments such as perms and straighteners contain chemicals. What you many not
realize is that the majority of shampoos and conditions that are sold also
contain chemicals that can irritate the scalp.
