Many people suffer from oily scalp or oily hair. Many refer to this as a greasy scalp or excess sebum in the hair. Most people believe that this is a genetic cause for the excess oil but typically that is not true. The sebum glands in the scalp can become overactive for many reasons. One of the main reasons that the sebum glands produce too much oil is a fungus called malasezzia furfur - the fungus that is responsible for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. While most everyone has a certain amount of this fungus, some people have higher amounts.

The sebum glands will produce more oil as a defense against this fungus. However, this is a problem since the fungus feeds off the oil in the scalp. It is one of the few times that a body reaction does not help to eliminate fungus or bacteria. Therefore to remove the threat of this fungus you must get the scalp sebum glands to produce less of the scalp oil. This is why we are thrilled to have found zinc pca as a primary ingredient for our hair products. Zinc pca slows down or "regulates" the production of scalp oil - it does not totally shut it down as that would not be good either. 3) Scalp sores since most scalp sores are caused by the fungus malasezzia furfur in the form of seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc pca goes to work against the excess oil that the fungus feeds of off but against the fungus itself since zinc by nature is anti fungal!
