Moroccan Oil  - Argan Oil For Dry Scalp and Dry Hair!

The Moroccan Wonder Oil: Argan Oil

Many cosmetic companies fete argan oil from Morocco.  This golden liquid is increasingly being used in skin and hair care products, and psoriasis and eczema sufferers praise its healing qualities.

Berber women use the oil to counter the ageing effects of the harsh desert sun on their hair and skin and to give them a glowing look. They also use it in cooking and the oil is becoming popular as an ingredient in spicy dishes in the West.

Argan trees have been growing in Morocco for millions of years but the trees and the cottage industry were dying out so UNESCO made the argan forest in South-Western Morocco into a Biosphere Reserve in 1999.  This combines conservation with sustainable resources.

Some Western women have heard a myth that most of the oil is derived from nuts excreted by goats and dislike the idea of using the oil.  Some oil is produced this way but the strong goat smell remains, making it of vastly inferior quality.  Extraction consists of a labor-intensive, long process.  Nuts are cracked and squeezed to produce the oil.  It used to take several hours to crack enough nuts to produce one litre of oil but now machine presses are increasingly used.

Argan oil contains many ingredients which are often praised by cosmetics companies. These include vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and plant sterols. Argan oil has twice as much vitamin E as olive oil.  The antioxidant Vitamin E is often regarded as having healing and anti-ageing qualities.

The oil’s essential fatty acids include Omega 3 and 6 – Omega 3 is believed to reduce skin inflammation and Omega 6 helps prevent dryness.

Plant sterols have anti-inflammatory properties.

This emollient oil, with its moisturizing and anti-ageing properties, is well worth trying.  Companies which sell this product include the natural beauty products manufacturers, Josie Maran and Kaeline Research.  Traditional cosmetics companies, such as Estee Lauder and Lancôme, also include it in some products. Research is also being done to see whether it helps heal eczema and psoriasis.
